You need to arrive at the St Thomas airport by 3:00 pm in order to get the last ferry to Tortola on the same day.
Most people traveling to the BVI, fly into St Thomas (STT) and then take the ferry to Tortola.
The last ferry every day is usually between 4:30 and 5:30 but the schedule is not always reliable. You can check the schedule out of Charlotte Amalie and out of Red Hook. Charlotte Amalie is closer to the airport and has more options. Red Hook is further away but often has the last ferry of the day.
Here are some tips to help make sure you catch the ferry:
- Carry on luggage only. If you don’t have to wait for checked bags, you will save some time. So if you know you are getting in after 2pm, do your best to not check a bag.
- Travel with 4 people or offer to pay for 4 taxi fares. Taxis in the Virgin Islands charge by the person. They will wait until the taxi is full before they leave the airport. (It’s $10/person to the Charlotte Amalie ferry terminal.) If there’s only 2 of you and the taxi is waiting for 2 more people, you could offer to pay for a “full” taxi.
- Try both Charlotte Amalie and Red Hook. Have your taxi driver take you to Charlotte Amalie. If all the ferries are gone (do not take the taxi driver’s word for it, go in and ask) and it’s before 5:30, try Red Hook next.
